We are paying tribute to the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the military. They served so we could enjoy the freedoms we enjoy today. Memorial Day stands as a tribute to the courageous individuals who gave their lives in service to our nation.
History of Memorial Day
Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States. Observed on the last Monday in May each year. Memorial Day has been called or known as Decoration Day. It goes back in origin to the American Civil War which claimed a combination of 620,000 lives from both the Union and Confederate servicemen and women.
General John Logan, commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic official in declared the first Memorial Day in 1868. The original date was May 30th, 1868.
Marked by placing flowers and flags on the graves of fallen soldiers today at Arlington Nation Cemetery, remains a tradition to this day. Most towns and cities also place flowers and flags on graves in local cemeteries.
I remember my parent (florist) preparing flowers for graves in our local, Maplewood Cemetery and delivering flowers for other cemeteries in the area. Not as big as Mother’s Day or Valentine’s Day but probably one of the biggest floral holidays.
Over Time
Although originally celebrating only the Civil War heroes as the years passed, Memorial Day evolved into a nationwide commemoration to honor all American soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice. Officially designated as a federal holiday and moved to the last Monday in May in 1971.

The tradition of flying the American flag at half-staff until noon symbolizes the nation’s mourning and respect. Additionally, the National Moment of Remembrance is observed at 3 pm local time and provides a moment of silence to honor the fallen. Some communities celebrate with parades and others visit cemeteries decorating the graves with flags and flowers.

In today’s society, it has been debated about the true meaning and significance of Memorial Day. Stating that like other holidays it has become commercial. However, I believe the emphasis should be on the importance of a world where conflicts persist and sacrifices are sometimes overlooked. We need to listen and hear the stories of our veterans. We need to listen to their healthcare needs and see that they are met. Their service is respected especially in a nation that’s values seem to be shifting. If you’ve never sat down with a senior veteran and listened to their story, you should. We owe these Veterans respect.
