Father’s Day Reflections

Father’s Day is a celebration honoring fathers. It is celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in our society by definition.

MEMORIES of My Father and TIMES SPENT TOGETHER

When I started writing this it reminds me how much I truly miss my father. Daddy passed away at age 79 just after retirement of an aneurism. None of us knew he had the aneurism and although he survived the surgery and we thought things were going to be okay he passed away in his sleep months following, the day he was to go back for his final checkup. Shocked and heartbroken at least he went peacefully in his sleep.

Looking back I am so very thankful he had time and got to know my children. They got to make happy memories together and will always have of him. And it makes you appreciate those time together. Daddy and I were very close and spent lots of time together fishing on Bull Sholes Lake in Arkansas just 20 minutes from us. We had a big fishing dock with 4 other families where we would go as often as we could sneak away from Mother. She did not like fishing !!

Those Other Lessons from Daddy

Father's Day

Daddy taught me to drive on the two lane highways and mountains of the Ozarks. I would work in the flower shop and he’d take me on deliveries, funerals, wedding setups and make me drive. He was a brave and gentle father. Mother was the disciplinarian but if he ever raised his voice I knew immediately I had done something very wrong. He only punished me one time with a belt but mother was really good with her flyswatter ! (too often but probably deserving)

Father's Day

Although mother’s are considered the “heart” of the family the one who holds things together generally their are a lot of single father’s stepping up these days for whatever reason into that role. There are more women in the workforce, armed services, politics than in past years. So the Dads have stepped into the roll that were typically only for the stay at home mother’s of the world.

The History of Father’s Day

So how did Father’s Day start. Well in 1908 in memory of 362 men killed in a coal mine in West Virginia, a church sponsored the first national even that was explicitly in honor of fathers. Father’s day was first recognized by Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd (now known as “the mother of Father’s Day”) whose father had, as a single parent, raised his six children. She conceived the idea of celebrating Father’s Day while she was listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. The first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910.

It was in 1972 in the middle of his re-election that Richard Nixon signed a proclamation making Father’s Day a federal holiday. Celebrated around the globe but in the USA and Canada on the third Sunday in June.

The Father of My Children

Father's Day

My husband, David N. Weatherford, wasn’t home much when my children were growing up. He traveled like many father’s for his job. David was very successful and dedicated to his industry and his hobby of shooting. He would leave each week on Sunday and return late on Thursday nights after the children were in bed or early on Friday mornings after they were in school. There just wasn’t a lot of “Daddy time” for two very active close in age children.

He missed soccer games, football games, PTA and teacher meetings often. But as I look back on the times we did have family activities and sporting events with good memories of tromping through the woods on bow and shooting competitions where we all were competitors.

Cooking meals together, travel to new locations. I realize that we did have good memories of their growing up years. And know that David thought he was giving us the best life by working….but maybe spending less job time and being together more might have been my choice now looking back on it.

But things were different then different times. We saw the world and although small until school age the children traveled with us everywhere. I think he gave them the desires to travel they have today and he taught them work etic from an early age. His birthday was around Father’s Day each year so we always had a big celebration of meal and gifts.

Wine and Dines Make Father’s Day Year Round

Nothing adds to a celebration better than a great meal and a bottle of fine wine. This year why not give your Dad a lasting gift he will remember each month with a Wine Club Membership. He would receive Fine Wines from Napa and Sonoma Valley. Each month in a big black gift box delivered right to the door. They will remember their special day, your love, each and every month of the year not just on Father’s Day.
