People don’t often think of Wine and Pie Pairings. When I started thinking and hearing about deserts and wine neither did I. I love a good pie and spent many summers watching my grandmother bake her pies as a child. But I never saw her drink wine with them! Nor would she.

So let’s start with wine and pie pairings.

The United States associates apple pie with the saying “as American as apple pie”, this pie did not originate in the USA.

So, where did the word pie come from? According to the dictionary, the word pie came from the name magpies pie before it was used for pie crust. Magpie was a filling in these pies as well.  “Pie” was the word for a magpie before it was a word for a pastry, from the Latin word for the bird, Pica ( the name of the disorder that makes you eat weird things). Pica morphed into “pie”…

The origin of the word pie is uncertain and no further related word is known outside English. It suggests that the word is identical in form to the same word meaning ‘magpie’ which is held by many to have been in some way derived from the connected word.

History Credits What Country for Pie

History credits the Ancient Egyptians as the original pie makers since they originated the pie crust. the pie, of course, is defined as food inside a pie crust. The Romans made a pie crust from flour and water but the crust was only to preserve the juices in baked meats and fowl. The wealthier Romans used seafood and even mussels in their pies. Meat pies were also often part of Roman dessert courses. In England, the original name used was pize

The Original Pies

The Medieval pies were meat pies. In the 15th century custard and fruit pie recipes began appearing often with dried fruits (dates, and raisins) and later fresh fruits were introduced. Fruit pies or tarts were probably first made in or around the 1500s, England tradition credits the first cherry pie to Queen Elizabeth I.

Pies originally came to the United States from England. In fact, the original apple pie recipes came in an inedible shell encasement. Just like the Romans the pie crust was not eaten with the filling. The purpose of the crust was simply to hold the filling inside during baking. A poet R Gree referred to the apple pie in the line “Thy breath is like the steeme of apple pies.” Which then leads to a following of the apple pie.
