Play-Doh Did You Know
Did you know that in the last 65 years, more than 2 billion cans were sold ! First introduced on shelves of Woodward and Lothrop Department Store in Washington, DC.
Hasbro Toy Company once estimated that if you put all the Play-Doh through the Fun Factory Play set you would have a snake like dough that could wrap around the earth 300 times ! Wow, that is a LOT of doh !!!
My first Play-Doh
When I was a child growing up my girl friends would gather at my house on weekends to make Salt Dough which was our Play-Doh. With it’s unbelievable smell of the moddeling compound.
With our flour, salt, water, and food coloring and baggies we would sit around the kitchen table for hours making pounds of salt dough. We would divide our dough into colors and bag it. We didn’t realize we were learning valuable skills. Skills like brushing upon our math,by measuring of solids and liquids. Or, what happens when you mix certain ingrediants together. Lessons on learning to follow directions and to share you finished product by dividing it into baggies for each maker.

How to make Play-Doh or Salt-Dough
With only 3 ingredients flour, salt, and water (you can add food coloring) this simple recipe was the perect into to kitchen basics. We would pick up the inexpensive fresh flour, and salt at the grocery store in anticipation of a fun filled day. At home we learned how to add the flour, salt and level them off, line up the liquid to lines on the glass Pyrex measuring cup. We used big plastic bowls or bends. We learned to knead dough and taking how to take turns kneading. Once the dough was mixed we would use plastic cookie cutters on wax paper to make shapes . Sometimes we’d put in the refrigerator to harden. We spent hours and hours playing with the salt dough.

You know you’re old when
We were the Boomers Generation and were treated to this popular modeling clay which has an unsual history. Oh, and has the most delightful smell !
The Sophisticated History of Play-Doh
Play-doh started out as a cleaning compound for soot stained walls. In the 20’s-40’s the company went broke twice. Then an imagenative nursary school teacher convienced her brother-in-law, the compound maker, to think of his product in a new way. It caught on as Play-Doh in the late 50’s and 60’s. Play-Doh was on back order for 16 months! Hasbro described the smell as Play-Doh perfume. They described the smell as sweet, slightly cherry and the native smell of salted wheat based dough. But it didn’t matter how it smelled it kept us kids busy for hours molding objects. I loved the smell personally !
Our Parents Generation
Our grandparents and parents generation did not grow up with Play-Doh, they made mud pies and there as there was a depression going on . We were the lucky children to discover Play-Doh and “Salt-dough”
