St. Valentine’s Day is also called Valentine’s Day. ( February 14). The current tradition is celebrated when lovers express their affection with greetings and gifts. Go here; it’s very interesting…
But How Did this Day (Valentine’s Day) Start?
The holiday has origins in the Roman festival of Lupercalia. Lupercalia was held in mid-February. This festival, which celebrated the coming of spring, included fertility rites and the pairing off of women with men by a lottery system.
At the end of the 5th century, Pope Gelasius I replaced Lupercalia. In the 14th century then celebrated as a day of romance.
In history, this day is thought to have taken its name from a priest who was martyred about 270 CE by the Roman emperor Claudius II Gothicus. Although there were several Christian martyrs named Valentine. And other accounts hold that it was Terni, a bishop, for whom the holiday was named. (and it is possible that the two saints were actually one person).
The Legends
One Legend says a priest signed a letter “from your Valentine” to his jailer’s daughter. Yet another legend states that they defied the emperor’s orders and secretly married couples to spare the husbands from war.
When did Card’s begin?
Formal messages appeared in the 1500s. In the late 1700s, commercially printed cards. In the United States ,the first commercial valentines were printed around the mid-1800s.
The symbols of This Special Day

Cupid, the Roman god of love, along with hearts and birds, represented emotion. They thought that the mating season began in mid-February. Later gifts such as candy, wine, and flowers, particularly red roses, became the symbol of beauty and love.
