Chronicles Note: This is Character Introduction 3 in The Enchanted Porch Chronicles
Sebastian Ashenwyck has traveled through kingdoms that no longer appear on maps. He has walked beneath unfamiliar moons, entered cities hidden beneath the sea, and crossed forests where the trees remember every visitor.
“Sebastian Ashenwyck carries a leather satchel filled with unusual objects and unfinished stories.
SebastianAshenwyckcan use the key to open doorways between worlds. Every time he turns it, however, the key takes one of his memories in payment.
He can no longer remember where he was born.
The First Doorway
Sebastian remembers finding the silver key, although parts of that memory have begun to fade.
He was a young man working in his father’s bookshop when a stranger arrived during a terrible storm. The stranger wore a gray traveling cloak and carried a small wooden box.
He asked Sebastian to keep the box safe until someone wearing a moonstone came to claim it.
The stranger never returned.
Years passed before Sebastian opened the box. Inside, he found the silver key and a message:
Every locked door protects something. Before you open one, be certain you are prepared to lose something of your own.
Sebastian assumed the warning was symbolic. He carried the key for several days before noticing a narrow doorway in the bookshop wall where no doorway had existed before.
The key fit perfectly.
On the other side was a marketplace beneath a violet sky.
Sebastian stepped through, and his life changed forever.
Sebastian Ashenwyck’s first journey cost him a childhood song.
His first journey cost him a childhood song. The second erased the name of his favorite teacher.
At first, Sebastian did not understand what was happening. He continued opening doorways, fascinated by each new world and the people he encountered.
Eventually, the missing pieces became impossible to ignore.
He began keeping journals so he would not lose every part of himself. His leather satchel now contains dozens of small books filled with names, places, and memories written in his own hand.
Some entries describe people he no longer recognizes. Others contain warnings he does not remember writing.
One sentence appears repeatedly throughout the journals:
Do not trust the man in the mirror when the final memory is gone.
Sebastian Ashenwyck does not know what it means.
A Collector of Lost Things
Sebastian Ashenwyck learned that the key did more than open doorways. It led him toward objects and stories that had become separated from their rightful worlds.
He returned a music box to a princess who had forgotten how to sing. He carried a sealed letter across three kingdoms and delivered it nearly one hundred years after it was written. He once found a mechanical bird in a market and felt certain he had seen it before, although he could not remember where.
Not every object in his satchel has been returned.
Some are waiting for their owners. Others are too dangerous to release. One small glass bottle contains a shadow that whispers Sebastian’s name whenever the moon is full.
He is careful about what he reveals. Experience has taught him that even good people can make dangerous choices when offered powerful magic.
Sebastian Ashenwyckand Evermere
Years ago, Sebastian discovered a doorway leading to the hidden fairy kingdom of Evermere.
The Heart Tree was already weakening. Sebastian believed his key might reopen the ancient paths and allow the kingdom to seek help from other magical realms.
The Evermere Council refused.
They feared outsiders would discover the Heart Tree and steal its power. When Sebastian attempted to open a doorway without permission, the council accused him of threatening the kingdom.
The doorway collapsed before he could complete it. The silver key took more than one memory that night.
Sebastian cannot remember exactly what happened next.
He knows someone betrayed him. He knows the Heart Tree lost part of its light. He also knows that Juniper Larkwhisper was present, although she was too young to remember him.
The Evermere Council called Sebastian a thief.
He has spent years trying to determine whether they were right.
A Man Who Lives Between Worlds
Sebastian Ashenwyck is intelligent, observant, and difficult to surprise
His guarded nature can make him appear cold, but he has quietly helped many travelers find their way home. He rarely accepts thanks and never stays in one place for long.
Sebastian can step through ordinary shadows without using the silver key, provided he remains within the same world. He can also touch certain objects and briefly see the memories attached to them.
That gift comes with a risk. Sometimes the memories follow him.
Sebastian Nightwell is neither a traditional hero nor a true villain. He makes mistakes, keeps secrets, and occasionally chooses the dangerous path because he believes it is the only one available.
The Woman Wearing the Moonstone
When Sebastian arrived at Moonwood House, he immediately recognized Clara Mae’s moonstone brooch.
He had seen it before.
The problem was that he could not remember where.
Clara Mae watched his expression carefully, but Sebastian denied knowing anything about the brooch. He needed time to search his journals before trusting her with the truth.
Then he saw the glowing crystal around Juni’s neck.
The last light of the Heart Tree had left Evermere.
“You should not have brought that light here,” Sebastian warned her.
Juni’s wings flared. She accused him of causing Evermere’s destruction.
Before Sebastian could answer, the silver key began to glow. A doorway appeared between the trees, but it did not lead to Evermere.
Beyond it stood a dark figure holding a second silver key.
For the first time in many years, Sebastian Ashenwyck looked frightened.
“Clara Mae,” he said quietly, “close the porch.”
“I cannot,” she answered. “The doorway has already invited someone through.”
The figure stepped closer.
Sebastian Ashenwyck reached for his key, knowing another memory might be lost if he used it again.
This time, the memory taken could be the one that explained everything.
