Here’s Mama’s Best Brisket Recipe

Ingredients

a 5- to 6-pound first-cut beef brisket

3 tablespoons vegetable oil

3 large yellow onions, cut into 1/2-inch pieces (about 5 cups or 3 pounds)

2 or 3 large garlic cloves, or to taste, minced

1 teaspoon paprika, preferably Hungarian

3/4 teaspoon salt

3/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper

Preparation for Mama’s Best Brisket

  1. Step 1: Preheat oven to 375°F.Step 2: In a Dutch oven or other heavy baking pan large enough to hold brisket, heat 1 tablespoon oil in the oven for 10 minutes.
  2. Pat the brisket dry and season with salt and pepper. Roast brisket in a pan, uncovered, 30 minutes.
  3. Step While brisket is roasting, in a large heavy skillet, cook onions in the remaining 2 tablespoons oil over moderately high heat, stirring, until softened and beginning to turn golden. Reduce the heat and cook the onions, stirring occasionally and reducing the heat if necessary, until deep golden, about 20 minutes more. Stir in garlic, paprika, salt, and pepper, and cook for 1 minute. Stir in 3 cups of water and bring to a boil.
  4. Step 4 Spoon onion mixture over brisket and bake, covered, with lid 1/2 inch ajar, 3 1/2 hours, or until brisket is tender. (Check the pan every hour and if necessary add more water.) Remove brisket from oven and let cool in onion mixture for 1 hour.
  5. Step 5: Remove brisket from pan, scraping onion mixture back into pan, and chill, wrapped in foil, overnight. Spoon onion mixture into a 1-quart measure and chill, covered, overnight.
  6. Step 6: Preheat oven to 350°F.
  7. Step 7: Discard fat from onion mixture, add enough water to the mixture to measure 3 cups total, and in a blender, blend gravy until smooth. Slice brisket against the grain (thick or thin, as you prefer). In a large ovenproof skillet, heat the gravy until hot, add the brisket, and heat in the oven for 30 minutes.

Fun Activities for All Ages

Organize lawn games like cornhole, sack races, and frisbee. If you are where there is a swimming pool, then be sure to keep an eye on “the little ones”. You can set up a craft station for kids to make their own flags or star-spangled banners. Depending on how hot it is out in the evening, just as the sun sets, gather everyone for a cozy bonfire and enjoy making s’mores before the fireworks displays. There is nothing better than watching fireworks from a boat, but watching fireworks anytime is a treat!

Conclusion

The 4th of July is a time to come together, celebrate our country, and create lasting memories with loved ones. Whether you’re hosting a big party or enjoying a quiet day with family, make the most of this special holiday. Happy Independence Day 2024!
