Easy Date Night Meals. I’ll let you in on something — at 79, I’m dating again. And let me tell you, everything about it feels new. The clothes, the conversation, figuring out where to go… even something as simple as cooking a meal for someone feels like it did the first time around, except now my feet get tired faster and I need a nap after. Ha! Getting older doesn’t mean you stop wanting a little romance in your life; it just means you learn to pace yourself while you go after it.
One thing hasn’t changed though — nothing says “I put thought into this evening” quite like a home-cooked meal. It doesn’t matter if you’re 25 or 79, or anywhere in between. Skipping the microwave dinner or the takeout box and cooking something yourself (or together!) tells the other person you care enough to try. And the good news is, you don’t need to be a chef or spend all afternoon in the kitchen to pull it off.
Suggestions for Your Date Night Meal
Here are a few ideas to get you started:
Grilled Lemon Herb Chicken with Roasted Veggies. This dish is light, easy to prepare, and full of flavor. Marinate the chicken breast in lemon, olive oil, and herbs, then grill to perfection. Pair it with roasted veggies like carrots, zucchini, and bell peppers. I like to serve this with a Chardonnay — the wine’s acidity plays off the lemon in the marinade, and the two together make your taste buds very happy.
Shrimp Scampi with Whole Wheat Pasta is a classy option that doesn’t require hours in the kitchen — about 20 minutes start to finish.
- Cook the shrimp in 1/4 cup butter and 1 1/2 tsp. garlic with 1/4 cup olive oil, letting the garlic brown for about 2 minutes. (I use Simple Truth shrimp from the freezer section — tail-off is easier to eat, but tail-on works fine too. The secret is to only cook the shrimp until it turns pink, on medium heat.)
- Add 1/4 cup lemon juice, 1/2 tsp. salt and pepper, and 1/4 tsp. oregano, and stir.
- Add 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese (and a little parsley if you’d like).
- Mix it all in an oven-proof pan and pop it under the broiler for 2 minutes.
- Toss with whole wheat pasta for a little nutritious twist on this Italian favorite.
This one pairs well with a dry, crisp white wine — think Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, or Riesling.
Mediterranean Stuffed Peppers. Stuffed with quinoa, spinach, tomatoes, and feta cheese, these colorful peppers are packed with flavor and nutrients. Bake until tender and serve with a simple side salad. (No shame in picking up a bagged salad and dressing it up yourself with olives, small tomatoes, and other fresh add-ins — that still counts as homemade in my book.) Pair with a dry, crisp white wine like a Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, or Riesling.

Set the scene. Light candles, play soft music, and set the table nicely. A few flowers never hurt either. Presentation matters just as much as the meal itself.
Don’t overcomplicate it. Keep the recipe simple. The goal is to enjoy the time together, not spend the whole evening stressed out in the kitchen. Pick a simple plan and stick to it.

What About Dessert?
Who doesn’t like chocolate? And chocolate with wine is nothing short of delicious.
Chocolate Brownie Bread
Ingredients
- 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips, divided
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup Dutch-process cocoa powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 3 large eggs, at room temperature
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup light brown sugar, packed
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup hot water
- 2-3 teaspoons espresso powder, optional
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 325°F (160°C). Grease and line a 9×5-inch loaf pan with parchment paper, leaving a slight overhang on the long sides.
- In a microwave-safe bowl, warm 1 cup of chocolate chips with the butter in 30-second increments, stirring between each spin, until smooth. Set aside to cool.
- In a large bowl, sift the flour, cocoa powder, salt, baking powder, and baking soda. Set aside.
- In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs with the sugars until well combined and light in color. Add the buttermilk, vanilla, and cooled melted butter and chocolate mixture. Whisk until blended.
- If using espresso powder, dissolve it in the hot water, then add to the wet ingredients and stir to combine.
- Add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients and stir gently with a spatula until about halfway combined. Add 1/2 cup of chocolate chips and stir gently until just combined.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top. Bake for 50-60 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.
- Remove the pan from the oven and immediately sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of chocolate chips evenly over the surface. Cool in the pan for 10-15 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool.
- Slice with a sharp knife and enjoy warm or at room temperature.
Wrapping Up
Date night dinners don’t have to be a lot of work to be romantic — sometimes the simplest meal, made with a little care, says more than a fancy restaurant ever could. Whether you’re planning a first date or a fortieth anniversary dinner, I hope one of these finds its way onto your table.
